There was a scene from a silent film, an Old West scenario with a cowboy and another gentleman (a barman or saloon worker). The Saloon worker is acting feminine and then it cuts to the dialogue which stated :
Clarence, the clerk-
one of Nature's mistakes
in a country where men
were men
This single scene stood out to me the most. This was before the censorship laws were set into play. I couldn't believe that just because this character was supposed to be gay, the called him "one of Natures mistakes". It made me question if Religion played a part in any of the "wholesome" views of film at the time? The only reason I say this is because a lot of religions believe to some degree that being gay is a sin/mistake.
Here are some links I found about religions and there views of the gay/lesbian orientation.
I believe if the Celluloid Closet was released in 2010 it would have definitely helped the further distribution of this film. People would be able to do what we are now, spreading it through embedded links. I could find clips from the film on YouTube and send it to my friends on Facebook letting them know about it. Social networking would help the word about the film spread faster.
