"Most expressions of homosexuality in most of movies are indirect. And what's interesting about that is of course that is what it was like to express homosexuality in life, that we could only express ourselves indirectly, just as people on the screen could only express themselves indirectly. And the sense in which the characters are in the closet, the movie is in the closet and we are in the closet"

I believe that the Celluloid Closet has opened the eyes of so many people and also the film industry on the importance of allowing anyone's stories to be told in the most honest way anyone can. It also portrayed that this industry is made up of different types of people and that respect should be extended to all. This film chronicles the history of representation and stories of the lives of gay men and women on and off screen, actors, film crew etc. It also gives us an insight of the evolution of homosexual characters on film and how it has shaped hollywood and the film world in general.

One of the most powerful lines I thought from the film was a quote from Susan Sarandon, talking about "Thelma and Louise." She talked about the film's ending, in which her character kisses Gena Davis and then drives off a cliff, she wonders what it would have been like if Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ended it the same way. Susan says ,"Well, then they would have had more reason to shoot them, I suppose," she says.

If the Celluloid Closet was made in 2010, I think it would have a greater impact because of the history that had happened in the last 5-10 years or so, with the types of movies that has been released, made and has won recognition (Milk, BrokeBack, Boy's Dont Cry etc). Hollywood now has been more keen to produce movies such as these and blockbuster success has been met as well.

  1. Yes, I thought this was a very honest look at gays in Hollywood. I could only imagine being gay and seeing this film.... it must feel gret that being gay is going mainstream and blending in many areas!
