The Celluloid Closet

“From the Closet to the Street: LGBT media activism online
I believe overall our society in 2010 has more tolerance towards the LGBTQ community than before. Since 2000 there have been many films and shows that try to portray a little part of the Gay community i.e. Will and Grace, Broke Back Mountain, etc. More people are speaking about it and also supporting it. Prop 8 has made our entire state talk and take action. Social Medias like Facebook and Blogs have also helped spread words and mobilized people. In the case of the high school senior whose school shut down the prom because she wanted to bring her girlfriend, the word spread out quick and within minutes it was all over Facebook.
The film showed that there were two views on the issue of visibility. Some people feel that some visibility is important even if it is negative. But others feel that Hollywood was showing the LGBTQ community in the wrong way and this is not good. For example a lot of the films that were shown back at that time killed off the gays and lesbians. They were seen as having a disease that needed to be cure. These characters were illustrated as unhappy and something to have pity on.
The film did a good job telling the audience that this is not something new. They were highly censored but the directors and writers found ways to put in between the lines. I think the clip from The Color Purple showed this.
This is community activist group in San Francisco that support and spread awareness on issues in the LGBTQ community. This organization have helped one of my close friends come out and basically saved his life.
